BACinema: The Incredibles ~ February 5th at 7:30 p.m.

Brad Bird’s The Incredibles was the hit family movie of 2004 and it’s easy to see why. The film is an action movie about awesome kids, a grownup movie about the ravages of middle age and a family movie about…family. Having lived in the suburbs for some time by now, Bob (Mr. Incredible), Helen (Elastigirl) and their three children, Violet, Dash and Jack Jack are content with having a normal life that doesn’t involve much revelation of their unique secret; that Mom and Dad are retired superheroes and all three children were born with superpowers that could save the world. So when Bob suddenly gets called to a remote island to fight an ominous, world-ending threat, the family doesn’t have much choice but once again be… Incredible. Bring your super-kids and super-husband/wife! The incredibles contains some cartoon violence but is acceptable for most ages. Tickets $6 • $5 BAC Members. Beverly Arts Center 2407 W 111th St, Chicago.

BACinema: Revenge of the Mekons ~ February 19th at 7:30 p.m.

It is probably the lyrics of The Mekon’s songs that best describe the lifespan and trajectory of the band itself. “When I was waiting in the bar/where were you?” “Come on, cruel world/Show me what you got.” “I was out late the other night/fear and whiskey kept me going.” Though they have existed, in various forms since the late 70s and were trailblazers of the genres of post-punk and country rock, the group has never received anything close to the acclaim or widespread attention of similar (and even derivative) groups from the same time period. Bluntly political and sometimes caustic, not to mention utterly unpredictable in their musical styles and arrangements on a song-by-song basis, The Mekons have survived being dropped by a major label, albums being shelved, hiatuses, and member changes to be one of the most enduring rock groups in history.

Revenge of The Mekons, a 2013 documentary, chronicles the lifespan of the band from their origins in working-class Leeds to rural Kazakhstan and Chicago (where several key members are now based and active). Grab the cheapest, frothiest beer you can find at concessions and bring your working class rage!
Chicago-based singer/songwriter Sally Timms of The Mekons will be in attendance for a Q & A after the screening. Not Rated. Documentary. Tickets $6 • $5 BAC Members. Beverly Arts Center 2407 W 111th St, Chicago.

Big Lagniappe ~ February 21st at 8:00 p.m.

Born in 2016, Big Lagniappe combine the energy and funk of New Orleans trad music and stir it in a Roux of midwest, blue collar soul; Making a sound all its own. The band currently consists of 9 members, although guest appearances happen often. The Big Lagniappe is influenced from New Orleans roots music, and keeps true to blue collar, Midwest town they hail from. Their original tunes are somewhat progressive in nature, and the traditional tunes, breath new life into the old. With sly grooves, tight hooks, and funky jams that take you to a special place, no show is quite the same. Tickets $23 • $20 for BAC Members. Beverly Arts Center 2407 W 111th St, Chicago.
